Wayne Cooper Smither, age 78, of Lebanon, TN and formerly of Owenton, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019, at his home.
Born December 19, 1940, in Owen County, he was the son of the late Anthony Wayne "Bod" Smither and Mary Will Johnson Smither. Wayne was a mechanic for Bud's Auto Sales and the Owen County School Systems. He finished his career as a truck driver for Rackley Roofing. Wayne's lifelong passion was drag racing, both watching and participating. In his younger years, he was affectionately known as 'Second Gear' and his family has fond memories of trips to Clay City and Edgewater.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Virginia "Ginny" Wyatt Smither; his children, John Wyatt Smither and Nancy Ruth (Curtis) Sutton; his grandchildren, Alexis, Haleigh, and Dawson Sutton and his sister, Lucy (Greg) Stryker. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and extended family.
McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Seminary Street location on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, from 5-8 pm. Visitation will resume at 11 am Thursday and the funeral will follow at 1 pm with Wayne's brother-in-law, Bro. Dale Adkins presiding. Burial will be in the Owenton Cemetery and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
