Virginia Jane Thompson Williams was born November 23, 1923, in Wheatley, Kentucky, the youngest child of N.S. and Margaret Davis Thompson. She was married December 22, 1942, to Ray E. Williams. Virginia passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Friday, June 21, 2019, at her home in Wheatley.
A lifelong lover of learning, Virginia graduated from Spencerian Business College and worked as a clerk for the Post Quartermaster at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, from 1943 to 1944. She was perhaps best known as the office manager at Kindoll & Riley in Owenton, where she was always ready with a pot of coffee.
Virginia was a devout member of Dallasburg Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities including children’s organist, Sunday School teacher, R.A. leader, Sunday School secretary, and church treasurer. One of her last prayer requests was to see the church continue to grow and prosper. She was active in the church’s Meals on Wheels program and was instrumental in the ministry outreach to the Hispanic community, helping to establish the Mountain of Blessing Hispanic Church in Wheatley.
A real friend to many - full of the gifts of laughter, friendliness, encouragement, and hospitality - Virginia loved dearly and was dearly loved. She was always on the go, ready for any adventure and ready every morning in case someone wanted to go out for lunch. An avid basketball fan, she faithfully followed the UK Wildcats, the Owen County Rebels, and any team her grandkids were a part of.
Virginia will be missed by a son, Tommy (Kathy) Williams of Wheatley; a daughter, Carol (Tim) Shelton of Wheatley; four grandchildren, Maggie (Colin) Bond of Lexington, Joe (Desiree) Williams of Wheatley, Jordan (Jaye) Shelton of Wheatley, and Justin Shelton of Lexington; and three great-grandchildren, AnnaKate Williams and Jase and Jett Shelton; and by a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray E. Williams; her mother, Margaret Davis Thompson; her father, N. S. Thompson; and her brother, Charles Frederick Thompson.
Virginia will be remembered as big-hearted, generous, and endlessly loving. As a friend wrote to her recently, “The Lord has found you to be a good and faithful servant.”
