Shirley Ann Smith

January 16, 1939 — March 14, 2026

Frankfort

Shirley Ann Smith was born on January 16, 1939, in Owenton, Kentucky. She passed away peacefully, at the age of 87, on March 14, 2026, in Lexington, Kentucky, surrounded by family.

Shirley was a woman who brought warmth and sweetness into the lives of those around her. She was known for her homemade candy, peanut butter fudge, and making mints for everyone's weddings. She had a special fondness for McDonald's apple pie. Shirley enjoyed playing Rook, watching NASCAR—especially cheering for Dale Earnhardt, Sr.—and loved camping and growing flowers. She also found joy listening to old country music and watching Southland Christian Church on television. Most of all, Shirley treasured being Mamaw and having her family together, especially when hosting Christmas dinners.

She will be missed by her children, Deborah A. (James) Garrison and Jeffrey (Melinda) Smith, and her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Smith Carter. Her grandchildren, Crystal Ann Garrison (Seth) Darnell, Patrick (Danielle) Smith, Samantha Jean (Kyle) Bibb, Zachary (Elizabeth) Smith, and Miranda Smith (Noah) Webster, along with eight great-grandchildren, continue to be a source of pride and joy for her. Shirley also leaves behind her siblings, Joyce Lathrem, Donald (Janis) Slaughter, and Donna Sue (Jan) Oakes.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl Gaines and Justine Carter Gaines Slaughter; her husband, W.T. Smith; her son, William K. Smith; her great-granddaughter, Piper Grace Bibb; and her sisters, Pauline, Lorena, and Stella.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at New Funeral Homes, located at 202 N. Main Street, Owenton, Kentucky 40359. The funeral service will take place at the same location on Wednesday at 2:00 PM, with burial to follow in the Owenton Cemetery. Bro. David "Milkweed" Wotier will officiate.

Shirley will be remembered for her loving heart, her delicious treats, and the joy she found in family and simple pleasures. Her legacy of love and togetherness will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
