Ronald Francis Smoot, age 91, of the Squiresville community of Owen County, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, at Owenton Health and Rehab.
Born February 7, 1934, in Owen County, Kentucky, Ronnie was the son of the late Denver Francis and Blanche Mary Roberts Smoot. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Smoot Farmer.
A lifelong horseman, Ronnie spent much of his life in thoroughbred racing. He worked as a trainer and jockey for some of Kentucky’s most iconic racing institutions, including Keeneland and Turfway Race Track, as well as at Claiborne Farms and Calloway Farms. His deep knowledge of horses and racing made him a respected figure in the industry and a mentor to many.
Ronnie was a longtime member of Squiresville Baptist Church. After retiring from the track, he continued serving others as a guard at Perry Park Golf Resort, greeting guests with the same warmth and humor that defined his life.
Known for his giving spirit and joyful presence, Ronnie never met a stranger. He loved nothing more than sitting on the porch with a good cup of coffee, chatting with neighbors and friends. For over 40 years, he brought loved ones together for his legendary annual Derby Party — a tradition that embodied his love for people and the sport that shaped his life.
He was an avid fan of western movies and a regular at the poker table, where his sharp wit and good-natured competitiveness always made him a favorite opponent. Above all, Ronnie will be remembered as a devoted Popaw, whose love for his grandchildren knew no bounds.
He will be missed by his daughter, Tina (J.B.) Boyle; his granddaughters, Jessica (Andrew) Brickner and Kate Boyle (James Brown); great-grandson, Denver Brown; step-son, Rodney Riddle; and nieces and nephews, Liz Prather, Mary Quinn, Michael Farmer, Charles Farmer, and Jenny Farmer.
New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at Squiresville Baptist Church on Monday, April 14, 2025, at 1 pm. Visitation will begin at Noon. A graveside service will follow with Bro. Craig Howard officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Squiresville Baptist Chuch.
