Rex R. Benson, age 54, of Owenton and formerly of Grant County, passed away Friday, December 4, 2020, at his residence.
Born January 30, 1966, in Miami, Florida, he was the son of the late Rowland "Rex" Thomas Benson and Nita Flo Ransdell Benson who survives. Rex was also preceded in death by his son, Tyler Benson. He was a 1984 graduate of Nova High School where he was active in Choralus, ran track, and played football. He also went on to play football at the University of Arkansas. While in Florida, he helped to operate his family's business Ranco Oil Company and owned Coconuts Water Sports. Locally he owned and operated Big Rex's Fireworks, coached little league football in Grant County, and enjoyed playing in poker tournaments at Belterra and in Las Vegas. He loved football and often joked his 'favorite team was whoever covered the point spread'.
Surviving are his mother, Nita Benson; his wife Becky Meadows Benson; his son, Rex Rowland (Kate Pryess) Benson; his stepchildren, Hannah (Bruce) Wilson and Samantha Cooper; his grandchildren Miley Nichole Benson and Blaze Douglas Wilson; his sister, Terri Mears as well as several nieces and nephews.
McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Private services will be held with Bro. David "Milkweed" Wotier presiding. Services will be live-streamed on YouTube on Monday, December 7, 2020, at 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grant County Braves Football program.
