Opal H Smoot

Opal H. Smoot, age 90, of Owenton, passed away Friday, February 22, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.

Born July 7, 1928 in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Fannie Leake Hawkins and the widow of Elton Smoot. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Lindsey Hawkins, Victoria Hawkins, Ella Bennett, Mary Stivers, B.M. Hawkins and Thomas Hawkins. Opal retired from the Owen County Schools as a custodian.  She and her husband also owned and operated Smoot's Grocery in Lusby's Mill for 17 years. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Opal is survived by her sons, Roy Gayle (Penny) Smoot and Randy Lee (Pam) Smoot; her grandchildren, Felecia Collins, Amanda Selm, DJ Harris, Jeremiah Morgan, Paula Giles ; her great grandchildren, Isaiah Collins, Charlotte Selm, Austin, Blair and Timmy Harris and Katie and Colton Morgan and Drake Giles; her great-great grandchildren, Braxton, Bryce and Brenton Harris. Her siblings, Roy Franklin Hawkins, Daphne Edwards and Sara Stevens also survive.

McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements.  Family will receive friends at the Main Street location on Tuesday, February 26th from 4-8 pm.  Funeral services will be held at 1pm Wednesday with Bro. Dale Adkins presiding.  Burial will be in the Owenton Cemetery and memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  A meal will be held at the church after services.
