Opal Smoot Hawkins

Opal Smoot Hawkins, age 92, of Owenton, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011 in Frankfort. Born January 17, 1919, in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Gus and Gertrude McGinnis Smoot. She was the widow of Cecil Hawkins and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Carl, Vernon, Forest, Elton, Roy, Gusta, Ruben and Willard Smoot. Mrs. Hawkins was retired from the Owen County School Systems, where she was the lunchroom supervisor at the High School. She was a member of the South Fork Baptist Church and a former Director of the Owen County Farm Bureau. Surviving are her daughter, Pam Chappell of Owenton; her sisters, Lucy Hall, Eloise Wright and Eula Strawn; two grandchildren, Scotty (Amy) Chappell and Jarrod (Shannon) Chappell and four great grandchildren, Hailey, Lilly, Macie and Lexie. McDonald & New Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Seminary Street Funeral Home on Friday, September 2, 2011 from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday with Bro. Everett Hawkins and Bro. Kerry Dale Spencer presiding. Memorial Contributions may be made to New Horizons Medical Center, Hospice of the Bluegrass or the South Fork Baptist Church.
