Mr. Norman Claude Smith, age 80, of Owenton, passed away Tuesday, February 12th. Born April 28, 1932, in Colosse, New York to the late Donald Houghton Smith and Norma Mae Alger Smith, he was a retired Registered Medical Technologist. He was a graduate of Mexico Academy in New York and the University of Louisville School of Medical Technology. He began his career in the lab at the Homeplace Clinic in Ary, KY and retired from Owen County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith served his county during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army where he was a Corporal and received the Purple Heart Medal for his valor and being injured in battle. His other life passions included Native American Culture, loving motorcycles, being a pilot and an avid amateur radio operator known by the call sign K4YKI. He was also a devoted attendee of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are his sons, Norman C. “Bud” Smith and Joel E. Smith of Palmyra, NY; his daughters, Renee A. Thompson of Macedon, NY and Elaine M. Battilina of Chittenango, NY; his fiancee, Fay Besaw; his brother, Leonard Smith; his first wife and mother of his children, Martha A. Smith; ten grandchildren, Ami, Justin, Jordan, Alicia, Michael, Megan, Mahala, Sarah, Jesse and Johanna. Six great grandchildren also survive. McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Visitation will begin after 10am.
