Michael Dean Figgins

June 6, 1956 — July 6, 2025

Michael 'Mike' Dean Figgins, 69, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025, after a short illness.

Born June 6, 1956, he was the son of Bud and Syble (nee Abrams) Figgins.  Mike grew up in Independence, KY, and graduated from Simon Kenton High School in 1974. Mike served his country for four years in active military service and 19 years as an Army Reservist.   He was a ROTC student at Eastern Kentucky University, where he received a bachelor's in Police Administration in 1978. He was stationed in Germany for three years. Mike was honorably discharged as a Field Artillery Major in 2002.  Mike moved to the family farm on Cedar Creek in 1983.  He briefly served as a policeman for the City of Owenton.  He then went back to Georgetown College and obtained his High School Math teaching certificate.  He taught math and special education at Owen County High School for 23 years and an additional 5 years at Eminence Independent.  For the last three years, he served as a substitute teacher for OCS.  Mike was a National Board Certified Teacher. He was known for his ability to make math make sense and dramatically bring up math ACT scores.

Mike loved to play guitar and was an accomplished performer.  He played with many bands over the years, and just about every local musician has played with Mike at some point.  He served on the Monterey Homecoming Fair Board as the music coordinator.  He loved to give up-and-coming musicians a chance in the spotlight.

Mike also enjoyed hunting in his free time and hosting an annual hunting party with many of his closest friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wayne (Brenda) Figgins, brother-in-law Dan (Linda) Roll, and faithful companion, Cash.  He is survived by his daughter Jillian Figgins, sons Jonathan (Jenny) Figgins, Michael Che (Judie) Powell, sister Linda Roll, brothers Harry (Cheryl) Figgins,  Eddie Figgins, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.  He was most proud of his granddaughter, Ilena Figgins.  He loved to support her competitive gymnastics career and share a love of math with her.

The family will receive those who loved Mike for a gathering of remembrance at the Main Street location of New Funeral Homes on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 5 to 7 pm.  A private Inurnment will be held in the Monterey Cemetery.

To honor Mike's memory, in lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Educational Excellence Foundation of Owen County, P.O. Box 593, Owenton, KY 40359.
