Maurie Z Prather, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on September 25, 2025, at the U.C. Medical Center, surrounded by the love she cultivated throughout her life. Born in Owen County on September 11, 1962, Maurie's journey was one marked by her unwavering dedication to family and her passion for creating culinary delights.
For over 25 years, she shared her culinary talents as a dietary aide and cook at the Owenton Manor, where her nurturing spirit and love for food brought comfort to many. Additionally, her time spent working at IGA for over three years allowed her to connect with the community she cherished deeply. Her ability to bring smiles through her cooking was matched only by her warmth and generosity in all aspects of her life.
Maurie's love for her family was unparalleled. She took immense pride in her children: Douglas (Cathy) Jacobs, Tracy (Shaun) Hendren, John (Mary) Prather, Vicki Johnson, and Becky (Eddie) Becker. Beyond her immediate family, Maurie found joy in the laughter and playfulness of her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will forever carry her spirit in their hearts. She is also survived by her brothers Joe Jacobs, Eddie (Amy) Jacobs, Orville Gibson, William Gibson, and Oscar Jacobs, along with her sister Nancy (Charlie) Marksberry. The bonds she shared with her family extended deeply beyond mere kinship; they constructed a rich tapestry of love, support, and shared memories.
Among her many pursuits, Maurie found happiness in her hobbies. She loved to cook and bake, often filling her kitchen with the sweet aroma of freshly prepared meals, and would often venture out to hike, embracing the beauty of nature. Additionally, her bond with her dog, Snickerdoodle, was a testament to her gentle soul and the love she freely gave to those around her.
Maurie's departure leaves a profound void in the lives of all who knew her. She is reunited in spirit with her loved ones who have passed before her, including her husband Teddy Prather, parents Blaine Jacobs and Betty Lou Johnson as well as her step father Ishmael Gibson. She is also preceded by her brothers, Dennis Glenn Jacobs, Jamie Jacobs, and her sister Rita Frazier. The cherished memories she created will continue to inspire and uplift the many lives she touched.
