Mary Ellen Skirvin

Mary Ellen Skirvin, age 74, of Sparta, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence. Born November 6, 1942, in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Lenore Poe Stewart and was preceded in death by her brother, Don Stewart. Mary Ellen was a retired dispatcher for Owen Electric, a member of the Poplar Grove Baptist Church and a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, L.J. Skirvin; her sons, Jay (Kim) Skirvin and Steven (Dee) Skirvin; five grandchildren, Austin and Stephanie Skirvin, Keith Parsons, JR and Sydney Skirvin. Also surviving are her sisters and brothers in law, Geneva Spenneberg, Evelyn Ballard, Ruby Bramblett, Betty Harrison, Nancy Howard, Judy Hearne, Brenda Martin, Betty Lou Skirvin, Bobby Skirvin and Jerry Roberts as well as several nieces and nephews. McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Main Street location on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 11am Tuesday with Bro. David "Milkweed" Wotier presiding. Burial will be in the Owenton Cemetery and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
