Margie Swigert

June 23, 1929 — December 17, 2020

Margie Elaine Smith Swigert was born at home, just like all her siblings, in Owen County, Kentucky on June 23, 1929.  At 91 years young, she went home to be with the Lord on December 17, 2020 at 6:45am.

Margie was always a hard worker.  She worked as a farmer, ticket clerk, factory employee, teacher’s aide and cafeteria worker. She believed in community and supported it. She was a Sunday School teacher before becoming a wife and mother at Cedar Hill Baptist Church. She joined the Booster’s club and was an aide at the Owen County Schools.  She retired from 13.5 years at Schlumberger, and worked in the cafeteria at Owen County Elementary School after her retirement at 72 years young.  Her education was the one room schoolhouse at Cedar Hill and she even skipped grades to catch up with her siblings.  She was as smart as she was sassy.  She loved history and learning.  She even mastered the I-phone for making phone calls at the young age of 91. Determined and always working hard, she found it hard to rest.  She found great enjoyment working in her vegetable and flower gardens.  When the weather was bad, she spent many hours quilting and making other sewing projects.  She was an avid UK basketball fan starting in 1962 and would listen on the radio when they played if the television wasn’t broadcasting the game.  You would see her rain or shine at baseball, football, and basketball games of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Family members loved playing card games with her because she always played to win.

She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas Pete and Effie Mae Smith.  Her husband John William Swigert.  Her siblings Margaret (Henry) Musgrave, Mollie (Floren) Slaughter, and Thomas (Gerri) Smith.

She is survived by family.

Her children: Carolyn Jo (Martin) Polomski, Joyce Ann (David) Bond, Charlotte Lane (Jim) Hisle, Kathy Lee (Terry) Spaulding and John William Swigert, II.

Her grandchildren: Jenna Elaine (Eric) Gray, Beth (Ryan) Cram, Kristina Hisle, Joseph (Erin) Hisle, Julie (Brennan) Johnson, Joshua and Jalen Spaulding, Ashton and Jackson Swigert
