Lori Taylor Powers, 49, of Owenton, lost her battle with cancer on March 15, 2012 at New Horizons Medical Center in Owenton Kentucky, while surrounded by family. Lori was born June 10, 1962 in Frankfort, Kentucky. She graduated from Owen County High School in 1980 and continued her education at the University of Kentucky. In 1985 she graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a B.A in Journalism. After college, Lori returned to Owenton where she became the Editor of the Owenton News Herald, a position she held for several years. In 1991 she accepted a position with the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority and later retired as Staff Assistant in March, 2011. Lori was an active member of the Owen County Historical Society and enjoyed genealogy. She also loved gardening, scrapbooking and spending time with her family and friends. Lori was a member of the Long Ridge Baptist Church and a beautiful child of God that touched the lives of all of those who knew her. Lori is survived by her husband of 20 years, J.O. Powers; her parents, Don and Kathy Taylor of Frankfort and Harold and Betty Jo Slaughter Wainscott of Owenton; her brothers Don (Anne) Taylor, David (Melissa) Taylor both of Frankfort and Barry (Susan) Wainscott of Louisville; her step daughters Chris (Todd) Spurgeon of Owenton and Natalie Goodin of Louisville; her grandchildren Alexa Goodin and Jack and Thomas Spurgeon; nieces Morgan Taylor and Claire Irish and a nephew Kaleb Taylor. The family will receive friends at McDonald and New Funeral Home on Seminary Street in Owenton on Monday, March 19th from 4-8 p.m. The funeral will be held at Long Ridge Baptist Church Tuesday March 20th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Owenton cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contribution be made to The Owen County Historical Society, The Owenton/Owen County Fire Department or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
