Lela Maude Karsner Hawkins

Lela Maude Karsner Hawkins, beloved mother of Linda Carol Hawkins Twyman and Everett Hawkins, passed away at her home on Sept. 30, 2016 at the age of 99. Lela Maude was born Feb. 9, 1917 near Monterey, KY and she married the late John William Hawkins on May 14, 1932. She was a devoted member of Old Cedar Baptist Church, working in Bible School for 42 years, Women's Missionary Union for over 60 years and teaching Sunday School. Lela Maude was well known for her lovely smile, frequent laughter and genuine caring for anyone in need or trouble. She taught school at the Monterey Grade School and rang the last bell for the closing of the school. She was a charter member of the Monterey Homemakers Club, a member of the Owen County Historical Society and a 35 year member of the Susannah Hart Shelby Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnathan Albert Karsner Jr. and Lela Brammell and a brother Harry Clark Karsner. Lela Maude is survived by a daughter, Linda and son-in-law Miley Walton Twyman; grandchildren April Dawn Twyman Avery (Keith) and John Thomas Twyman (Elizabeth Bramel Mann Rinker); great grandchildren Anna Katherine and Ian Thomas Avery: son Everett Hawkins and daughter-in-law Kay Morgan Reed; grandchildren Amy Layne Hawkins Chappell (Scotty) and Abby Virginia Hawkins Alexander (Andy); great grandchildren Hailey Nicole Chappell, Lilly Morgan Chappell and Olivia Grace Alexander. The four grandchildren and spouses are pallbearers. McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. The funeral will be held at Old Cedar Baptist Church on Monday Oct. 3. Visitation begins at 11 am and the funeral at 2pm. Her son, Everett Hawkins , will conduct the funeral. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass or Old Cedar Baptist Church.
