Larry Curtiss Gaines, 74, of Lawrenceburg, KY, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 30, 2024. Born on February 18, 1950, in Frankfort, KY, he was the beloved son of the late Freddie L. and Olivia Pearl Atha Gaines.
Larry graduated from Franklin County High School in 1968 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1975. A Vietnam War veteran, he served as a Seabee and Special Forces Operator, earning respect and admiration for his courage and commitment. On July 6, 1974, Larry married the love of his life, Linda Carter, and together they shared 50 beautiful years of marriage.
After his military service, Larry built a long and successful career as a draftsman and engineer, retiring from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He also worked for Atec and HMB during his professional journey. His passion for service extended beyond his career, as he was a dedicated Baptist pastor for numerous churches. Larry also served as Director for New Life Baptist Missions in Hamilton, OH, leading many mission trips both stateside and abroad, where he had a lasting impact on the lives of many, especially the youth.
Larry was a man of many talents and interests. He found joy in camping, fishing, and sports, but his unique passion was in the art of clowning, puppetry, illusions, and creating balloon sculptures—bringing smiles and laughter wherever he went.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Carter Gaines; his loving children, Greg (Sonya) Gaines, Lori (Earl) Gresham, and Lance Gaines (Brandy); and his cherished grandchildren, Matthew Gaines, Madison Gaines, Meghann Gaines, Keria Mello, Hillary Kays, Laurissa Gaines, Hallie Clark, Ethan Clark, Quentin Boling, and Zachary Boling. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Arthur Luke Gaines, Desmond Mello, Luna Barnes, and one on the way, along with many 'adopted' children who were blessed to be part of his life.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his siblings, Regina Beckham, Sammy Gaines, and Marsha Gaines.
New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. A memorial service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Monterey Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. His legacy of love, laughter, and faith will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Memorial contributions in Larry's memory may be made to Monterey Fair, KY Dept of Fish & Wildlife, or St. Judes Childrens Hosptial.
