Jim Herndon, age 73, of Owen County, KY, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2026, with his family by his side.
Born September 13, 1952, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late Charles Wesley Herndon and Wanda Hicks Herndon, who still survives. Jim spent most of his life farming and retired in 2012 with 33 years of service from Johnson Controls in Florence, KY. He also enjoyed hunting with his sons and grandchildren and especially looked forward to those spring and fall fishing trips with his best friend Danny and his sons. His greatest joy was his grandchildren; he loved teaching them the great ways of living by working hard and treating people with respect. Later in life, he enjoyed watching all the old westerns on television; it was rare to enter his home unless there was a western playing.
He was a member of Popular Grove Baptist Church. He married the love of his life, Phyllis Stewart Herndon, on October 10, 1975, and they have been married for 50 years. They had three wonderful sons and two daughters-In-law and four grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sons Michael, Chad (Katie), and Christopher (Stephanie); grandchildren, Kara (Joe Sodano), Charlie (Miranda Arnold), Dakota, and Makayla. He is also survived by his mother, Wanda Herndon, and his brother, Willie (Tara) Herndon. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, as well as his brothers, Chuck and Mike.
Family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 4 - 8 pm at the Main Street location. Funeral services will be at 11 am on Saturday at the funeral home, with Bro Craig Howard officiating. Burial will be in the Poplar Grove Cemetery, and memorial contributions may also be made to the cemetery,
