Jim Bob Cook

James Edward “Jim Bob” Cook, age 95, of Monterey passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2023. He was born September 6, 1927, in Monterey, KY, and was the son of the late Herndon “Toad’ and Eula Wilhoite Cook.

He is survived by his wife; Barbara (Griffin) Cook; one daughter; Darlene (Mike) Wainscott of Owenton, KY; one son: Phil Cook, Owenton, KY, two sisters; Mary Lee Tackett, Monterey, Ky and Alice Margaret Wheeler, Monterey, KY; five grandchildren: Deborah (Rodney) Parker, Michelle (Brad) Dunavent, Shannon Mitchell Cook, Jason (Marlene) Wainscott, and James Phillip “JP” (Kristina Ueltschi) Cook; Nine great-grandchildren: Kirsten Parker, Olivia (Matt) First, Luke Dunavent, Kaitlyn Parker, Savannah Anderson, Lucy Dunavent, Wade Cook, Brennan James Cook, and Memphis Cook; He is preceded in death by his brother, John C Cook.

He was a long-time, faithful member of the Monterey Baptist Church for 69 years, where he served as a trustee for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over seventy years. In 1945, at the age of 18, Cook was called to serve in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. Cook served his country from 1945 to 1947. He received the rank of Corporal during his time in service and received several commendations including the WWII victory medal, sharpshooter, and PTO ribbon.

He loved growing a garden, was an avid fisherman and hunter, and on most mornings, he enjoyed playing cards at Monterey Market. Jim Bob was a 5 ^th generation farmer and continued his family legacy by farming the land by Sawdridge Creek for over seven decades. His family has always stated that he, “rarely wants to leave the creek”. If you have seen it, you can understand why he called Sawdridge Creek his home and peacefully left this world on the banks of the creek that he held dear.

New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. and funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Monterey Baptist Church with Rev. Jeremy Warren and Rev. Everett Hawkins officiating. Interment will be at the Monterey Cemetery. Active casket bearers are Shannon Cook, Jason Wainscott, James Phillip Cook, Luke Dunavent, Rodney Parker, Brad Dunavent, Wade Cook, and Brennan Cook.
