Gerald Mason Powell, age 78, of Owenton passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Piketon, OH. Born July 12, 1938 in Owen County, he was the son of the late Robert and Oletta Mason Powell and the widower of Louise Byrd Powell. Gerald was also preceded in death by his beloved grandson Tanner Duke as well as his brother Bobby Powell. Gerald lived his love for the Lord, family and friends every day. His faith sustained him and his family through many hardships. He was a devout member of Owenton First Baptist Church. As a dedicated 39 year employee with Kentucky Utilities, Gerald developed life-long friendships with his co-workers and employees. He had a passion for raising, riding and showing quarter horses. He was very active with the Quarter Horse Association where he held several offices. One of Gerald's greatest joys was trail riding with friends and family. He also enjoyed woodworking, raising a vegetable garden and traveling with friends and family. Gerald was a kind hearted, loving and influential leader in the Owenton Community. During his lifetime he was a member of the Owenton City Council, Pioneer Saddle Club and the Rotary Club through which he received the Paul Harris Award. He also devoted a great deal of time to the Owenton 4-H Horse Club. Surviving are his wife Brenda Wilson Powell; his daughter, Millie Carolyn Duke and her husband Fred; his sister, Shirley Walker and husband Bobby and his granddaughter Mason Blair Duke. McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Seminary Street location on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday with Bro. Brad Banks and Bro. Robert Baker presiding.
