George Stephen Wheeler

November 7, 1947 — April 13, 2023

George Stephen Wheeler, age 75, of Owenton, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 13th, 2023 in his wife's arms.
Born November 7, 1947, in Fayette County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late George William Wheeler and Lois Stephens Wheeler. Known to many as “Luther” and to others as "Steve" he was a 1966 graduate of Bryan Station High School where he played quarterback for the Defenders. He continued his education at Eastern Kentucky University and retired from Kentucky Utilities after 44 years of service as a Supervisor. He was the biggest UK and Cleveland Browns fan ever. He loved golf, hunting, fishing, camping, boating and was an avid reader. As a proud "66er" he stayed in touch with his Bryan Station graduates, meeting once a month for supper for decades. He loved his grandchildren, Addi and Bryce, more than life. He also loved his dogs Sadie and Spencer.
He will be missed by his devoted wife, Susan Egelston Wheeler, who has been by his side since 1974. They married in 1977 and had one loving, devoted, beautiful son, Josh, born in 1982. He is survived by his son, Josh (Natalie) Wheeler, two siblings, Mark Wheeler and Melinda Veirs, grandchildren, Addison and Bryce Wheeler, nephews and niece, Shawn (Christy) Wheeler, Jason (Danielle) Veirs and Jennifer Settles. He leaves behind so many wonderful, lifelong friends, too many to count.  His friends have shared stories of his wild and crazy shenanigans his entire life. He danced to the beat of his own drum and lived a life of no regrets.
New Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements. A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 4 to 6pm on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023, with visitation beginning at 3pm at the Seminary location.
A second Celebration of Life is being planned to accommodate family, friends and the Bryan Station 66ers at a later date in Lexington.  Everyone is welcome to attend either one or both.
Glenn Grisham will officiate the Owenton service, with closure by Everett Hawkins.  We plan on sending Luther/Steve off with a walk down memory lane.  Due to immunocompromised family members, please refrain attending if currently feverish or ill.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Bryan Station 66ers, Attn: Judy Giannasio, Treas. 130 Donerail Drive, Georgetown, kY 40324
