Geneva Oakes Fortner

April 29, 1935 — June 20, 2021

Geneva Oakes Fortner, age 86, of Worthville, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2021, at Northon's Women's and Children's Hospital in Louisville.

Born April 29, 1935, in Owen County, she was the daughter of Nathaniel "Babe" Oakes and Atha Duvall Oakes. She worked for several years at the Dime Store and farmed beside her husband.  She was a dedicated member of Owenton United Methodist Church where she treasurer for many years. She was the ultimate caregiver, not only to her family but to the over 53 foster children she helped foster with her mother. She loved farm life, growing flowers, being with her family, and especially being 'Mamaw' to her grandchildren.

Geneva is survived by her son, John (Amber) Fortner; her grandchildren, Tyler (Hannah), Matthew, Wade, and Kaylee; her great-grandchildren, Jolynn Marie and Jonathan Landon; her siblings, Nathan Oakes, Hope Oakes, and Dorothy Oakes; and her nephew, Dudley Oakes.

McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Seminary Street location on Friday, June 25, 2021, for a visitation from 11 AM to 2 PM, a funeral service will follow at 2 PM  with burial in the Owenton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Owenton United Methodist Church.
