Gary Allen Smoot

Gary Allen Smoot, age 67, of Owenton, passed away Friday, August 28, 2020, at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.

Born October 28, 1952, in Owen County, he was the son of the late Frank and Naomi Mason Smoot. Gary was a lifelong truck driver, retiring from Ryder. He served the Owen County Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years, part of that time as Fire Chief. He enjoyed fishing and attending basketball but most of all he loved being with his friends and family.

Gary is survived by his wife Lydia Hammond Smoot, they would have been married for 29 years on Monday. He is also survived by his children, Melissa (Fred) Partin, Casey (Everett Srouder) Hammond, Denise (Bobby Prather) Smoot and Taylor (Brandi Wilson) Smoot; his grandchildren, Daniel, Megan, Courtney, Destiny, Jason, Mason, and Layson; his great-grandchild Alexander; his siblings, Diana Soard, Frank Smoot, Jr., Yvonne Karsner, Sharon Lankford, Tammy Burke, and Patricia Taylor and his mother-in-law, Ethel Hammond.

McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Seminary Street location on Sunday, August 30, 2020, from 4 - 8 pm. This will be a pass-through visitation with social distancing and masks required. A graveside funeral will be held at 1 pm Monday in the Owenton Cemetery, please meet at the funeral home at 12:30 to go in procession. Memorial contributions are suggested to McDonald & New Funeral Homes for expenses.
