Eleanor B. Ligon

Eleanor B. Ligon, 94, of Owenton, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Owenton Manor. Born May 31, 1914, in the South Fork Community of Owen County she was the daughter of the late Aaron F. and Lucy Jane Gray Ligon. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Grover Gray (Grace D.) Ligon and Boyce C. (Jane H.) Ligon. Miss Ligon was a 1931 graduate of the Old Owenton High School; she was one of only two surviving graduates. She also graduated from the University of Kentucky where she received her Bachelors and Masters degree in Education. She went on to teach Home Economics in Gallatin, Woodford and Franklin Counties. Upon her retirement from teaching she took a position in Atlanta, GA as a nutritionist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In this position she traveled the south-eastern United States. She was also a member of the South Fork Baptist Church where she was active until her health declined. Miss Ligon is survived by her sister, Betty Ligon; her niece, Toby (Billy Fisher) Bell of Owenton; her nephew, Michael (Jean) Ligon of Lexington; four great nieces and nephews, Amber Bell, Allen Gray (Alicia) Bell both of Owenton and Jill and Kevin Ligon of Lexington; great –great niece and nephew, Bethany Grace and Taylor Gray Bell of Owenton and a host of cousins and friends. Arrangements are being handled by McDonald & New Funeral Homes. Family will receive friends at the Seminary Street location on Monday, March 16th, from 4-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm Tuesday at the funeral home with Bro. Jesse Bourne and Bro. Jimmy Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Owenton I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Owenton Manor Activities Fund; New Horizons Medical Foundation; Owen County Retired Teachers Association or the Charity of One’s Choice.
