Dr. Thomas Richard Marshall, 87, passed away Friday Jan. 19, 2024 in Edgewood. He was born on Feb. 5, 1936 in Carroll County son of the late Lyman Richard and Lillian Thomas Moore Marshall. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Jimmy and Gary Marshall and two nephews. After graduating from Carrollton High School in 1954 he enrolled in Eastern Kentucky State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958. His Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree came from the University of Louisville in 1961. He was drafted into the U. S. Army and served faithfully from 1962 to 1965. He had his own dental practice in Carrollton from 1965 to 1966 where his wife assisted him. He then was a dentist at the V.A. in Chillicothe, OH until 1973 when he was promoted to Chief of Dental Services for both V.A. Hospitals in Cincinnati and Ft. Thomas, KY. He continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1997. He also served as Lieutenant Colonel for the 2288th Dental Service Detachment - Army Reserves from 1987 - 1991 receiving many accolades and awards for his service. He was named a Kentucky Colonel in 1964 and was a long-time member of Owenton First Christian Church. "Poppa Doc", as he was lovingly known by his family, will be missed by his wife of 63 years, Marion Lita Powell Marshall, daughter, Melanie (Robbie) Swigert, three grandchildren, Lita Anne (Will) Newman, Krissy (Jonathan) Locker and Richard Swigert, three great grandsons, Cason and Waylon Locker and Rylan Newman, two sisters, Sue (Fransisco) Leite and JoKay Clark, one brother, David (Pat) Marshall and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be on Thursday Jan. 25 at 2PM at New Funeral Home - Main St. Visitation starts at 11AM. Burial will follow in the Owenton Cemetery and memorials may be made to either the Owenton First Christian Church or Owen County Friends of Animals.
