Danny Bryan Gortney, 74, of Owenton, Kentucky, passed away on January 1, 2026. He was born on January 4, 1951, in Frankfort, Kentucky, to the late Leslie Herman Gortney and Margaret Francis Bryan. Danny lived a life defined by service, hard work, and devotion to his family.
Danny attended Good Shepherd School and graduated in 1969. After high school, he served his country in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class on January 4, 2011. He took pride in his service and the responsibility of leading others. Following his military career, he continued serving the community through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet until his retirement.
On November 24, 1993, Danny married the love of his life, Vickie Gortney. He often said that was the day he hit the lottery. Together, they built a life centred on family and shared moments.
Danny is survived by his wife, Vickie Gortney; his children, Gabriel “Gabe” Gortney and Kara Carter (Nathan); and his grandchildren, Maddax Jade Gortney, Gannon Gabriel Gortney, and Hayden Brooke Carter.
He loved fishing so much that he made his own bait, and he also enjoyed golfing and vintage cars, particularly his 1967 Camaro. Later in life, he took up beekeeping and proudly produced his own honey. Above all, he found the utmost joy in his role as Grandad and Geedaddy. Danny was always ready to lend a hand and support others without being asked. He cherished conversation and quality time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Herman Gortney and Margaret Francis Bryan; his maternal grandparents, Lucetta Pearl Bryan and Ben Bryan; his in-laws, Ann and John Cook; and his special friend, Mamaw J.
Danny will be remembered for the life he lived and the love he shared. His memory lives on through his family and the moments they shared together.
