Christine Francis (Hunter) Mason was born in Owen County, Kentucky on January 20, 1923. She passed from her earthly life on October 30, 2020 at Lutheran Haven Nursing Home. She had been a patient at the facility for over six years due to Alzheimer’s disease. The family was sad to witness her progressive mental and physical decline. She was predeceased in death by her father, Willie Hunter; mother, Bessie (Woolums) Hunter; husband, Buford Mason; and sister, Ruby (Hunter) Covington.
She leaves behind two sons, Wayne (Carol) and Gary (Mary) Mason; three grandchildren, Kelly Diane Whitson; Christopher Brian Mason (Megan) and Jennifer Lynn King (Dana); and seven great grandchildren, Mackenzie Whitson; Madaline Mason; Micah Mason; Piper King; Asher King; Merrit Mason and Brayson King.
Christine married Buford, a farmer, on July 19, 1941. She remained a devoted wife and mother until he died in 1967. Shortly after this, at the age of 44, she sold the farm and got her driver's license. She got a job working as a nursing assistant at Owen County Memorial Hospital. She later took a similar position at St Joseph Hospital in Lexington where she worked until her retirement. She did all of this with grit, determination and a sixth grade education.
She was a loving Mom, Granny and Great Granny. Many considered her “friend,” because she was a true friend to many. Christine was generous and willing to share with those she saw who were in need. She eventually moved to Florida to be near her immediate family. The result was that family relationships grew stronger.
She became a Christian after attending a revival in Owenton, Kentucky as a teenager. She was baptized in a farm pond. After that, she became a lifelong, faithful church member and follower of Christ. Her favorite hymn was Victory in Jesus. She placed her eternal future in the truth of John 3:16. Her family has followed in her spiritual footsteps. We rejoice that Christine is now able to visit with her mother who died when she was two. She has now joined a host of other family members and friends who had gone before her.
Those of us she has left behind, mourn her passing. But, we rejoice knowing she has gone on to her heavenly reward. We praise God for the peace He gives us that is beyond our human understanding. Christine would remind all of us here today, whether family or friends, that victory over sin, death and Satan is available to any who would accept Jesus as their personal Savior and live for Him. The Bible assures us of where she is today. Her spirit is now absent from her 97 year old body but present with the Lord. She is living today in her eternal home where there is no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain.
Christine believed these words the Apostle Paul wrote as recorded in 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verses 54 through 58.
“When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
