Charles Francis Thornton

Charles Francis Thornton, age 88, of Owenton, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, KY.

Charlie, as most people knew him, was born in March 1937 to the late James E. and Frances Bishop Thornton. A strong believer in the value of education, he graduated from Owen County High School in 1955, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Kentucky in 1961, and went on to receive his Master of Arts from Western Kentucky University in 1966. He dedicated more than thirty-five years of his life to teaching, primarily in the Louisville area.

Charlie also proudly served his country in the United States Army. His faith was central to his life, and he was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Owenton. In his free time, Charlie enjoyed spending time with his dear friends at the Owen County Sportsman Club, especially playing cards. In recognition of his service and character, he was named a Kentucky Colonel in 2010.

Charlie will be missed by many friends and his church family.

New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements.  Visitation will be held at the Main Street location on Thursday, July 3, 2025, from 10 am until Noon.  Funeral services will follow at Noon with Bro. Brad Banks presiding. Charlie will then be entombed in the Owenton Cemetery. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to First Baptist Church of Owenton.
