Mrs. Carlene Poe Shryock, age 91, of Owenton passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Owenton Center. Born May 20, 1923, in Owen County, she was the youngest of eight children born to the late Charlie and Mary Jane O'Banion Poe. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, Broadus Shryock. Also preceding her were her son, Wayne Shryock, granddaughter, Audra Shryock and her siblings, Octavia Acree, Alton Poe, Sylvia Fortner, Alva Poe, Thurston Poe, Ralph Poe and Willie Poe. Carlene was a homemaker and a devoted member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was the former treasurer. Her life's work was spent baby sitting and helping raise the community's children. She was an avid gardener, raising vegetables late into her 80's and believed firmly in using and canning what her garden and apple trees yielded. Carlene is survived by her son, Garroll 'Red' Shryock and his wife Becky; grandchildren, Jason (Trina) Shryock, Megan (Josh) Hearn, Susan (Baris) Ertran, Blair (Jonathan) Baldwin; nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Family will receive friends at the Main Street location on Wednesday, February 25th from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 1pm Thursday with Bro. David "Milkweed" Wotier and Bro. Bill Allen presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Hill Baptist Church
