Carl Banks, age 78, of Owenton, Kentucky passed away on May 25, 2012. He was born the youngest of 11 children on November 22, 1933 to Stanley and Cora Lee Little in the Mary community of Wolfe County, Kentucky. After graduating from Wolfe County High School, Carl enlisted in the United States Army and served 3 years as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division. He then attended college ultimately earning a doctorate of education from the University of Kentucky. Carl served in many positions from teacher to principle during his career finally retiring as superintendent of Owen County Schools, a position he held for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Brakefield Banks, his son James Carl Banks of Madison, Alabama, his wife Juliann and granddaughters Emma and Sarah; his son Stan Lee Banks of Frankfort, Kentucky, his wife Leigh and grandson Samuel Carl; his son True McClanahan of Louisville, Kentucky, his wife Tammy and his granddaughters Tiernan and Delaney; and his sister, Nancy Jones and her husband Robert, of Miamisburg, Ohio. In addition to his immediate family, Carl is survived by Geoffrey Geoghegan of Henderson, Kentucky who was like a son to him as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Pall bearers are his sons as well as Larry Green of Monterey, Kentucky and Joey Lynch of Lexington. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 29 at Main Street location of McDonald and New Funeral Home in Owenton, Kentucky with the funeral to immediately follow. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Owen County Relay for Life or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
