Bobby Gaines, passed away on March 19, 2026. Born on February 25, 1939, Bobby’s life was marked by dedication, hard work, and a commitment to his community that touched many lives.
Bobby devoted much of his early career to dairy farming and tobacco cultivation alongside his brother Donald Gaines. At the age of 65, Bobby retired from the U.S. Forestry Department, where he played a crucial role in leading numerous teams to combat forest fires across several states—a testament to his leadership and courage in protecting the environment. In addition to his agricultural and forestry work, Bobby was a skilled and self-taught taxidermist, reflecting his appreciation for wildlife. For 17 years, he served as magistrate for District 2 in Owen County, bringing fairness and commitment to his duties and earning the respect of his fellow citizens.
Bobby was also a proud member of the Owenton First Baptist Church, where his faith guided him throughout his life. He found great joy in his family and cherished the time spent with his loved ones, including his brother Donald (Sue) Gaines, and nieces and nephews Darlene (Gary) Hunter, Debbie (David) Shewmaker, Valerie (Ricky) McEntire, Regina (Mike) Walker, Donette (Charlie) Gaines, Vickie (Steve) Steger, Mark Gaines, Mitchell (Renaee) Gaines, and Gail (Rodney) Forsee. His legacy lives on in 16 great, 23 great-great, and 3 great-great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mae Estes Gaines and Marion Gaines; brothers R.H. Gaines, William Gaines, and Carl Gaines; his twin sister Betty Wilhoite; nephews Mike Gaines and David Wilhoite; great nephew Chad Walker; great-great nephew Kole Shewmaker; and his cherished golden retriever.
A visitation will be held on March 24, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at New Funeral Homes located at 202 N. Main Street, Owenton, KY 40359. The funeral service will follow the same day at 2:00 PM, honoring Bobby’s life and legacy.
Memorial contributions may be made to Owen County Friends of Animals or Owenton First Baptist Church.
