Billy Clarence Lathrem, age 79, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
Born August 14, 1944, in Owen County, he was the son of the late William and Flossie Cornman Lathrem. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette Wainscott. He leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and craftsmanship. An Owen County High School graduate, Billy's life was marked by dedication, talent, and service.
Billy served his country honorably as a Vietnam War veteran, rising to the rank of sergeant, a testament to his bravery and commitment. After his military service, he returned to Owen County and became a well-known home builder, self-employed and respected in the community. For 40 years, he owned and operated B&L Carpets, establishing himself as a cornerstone of local business and industry.
Beyond his professional achievements, Billy was a celebrated musician. His rockabilly music, produced with Sunray Records and REM Records, continues to resonate with fans. One of his songs was featured on an Elvis tribute album, showcasing his remarkable talent. Billy also appeared as a stand-in actor in the movie “The Great Race” with Paramount Pictures and frequently performed on popular shows such as “American Bandstand” and “The Bob Braun Show.” His concerts around the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area were eagerly anticipated events that brought joy to many.
Billy's personal life was filled with love and generosity. Married to his high school sweetheart for 59 years, he cherished his family above all else. His greatest joy came from his two granddaughters, whom he adored. A devoted member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Billy’s selflessness, kindness, and loving nature touched everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Slaughter Lathrem; his devoted son Brian Lathrem and wife Rita; his beloved granddaughters, Marlee Beckham and husband Kaleb and Chelsey Lathrem. He will also be missed by a host of extended family, including his nephew Barry and cousins, Brenda, Phyllis, Larry, Carol, and Pat.
Billy will be dearly missed, but his legacy of love, music, and community service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Arrangements are entrusted to New Funeral Homes. Family will receive friends for visitation at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church on Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 11 am until 2 pm. Funeral services will follow at 2 pm with Bro. David "Milkweed" Wotier presiding. Burial will be in the Owenton Cemetery, with military honors, and memorial contributions are suggested to the church.
