Bessie Mae Walker Whitaker

Bessie Mae Walker Whitaker, age 78, of Owenton, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.

Born January 14, 1941, in the Monterey Community of Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Lockett Beckham Smith and preceded in death by her son, Vernon Ray Walker and her brothers, W.T. and Clarence Smith.  Bessie was a friend to all and touched many lives with her work as a Nurses Aide and Therapy Aid.  She worked first at Owen County Memorial Hospital then New Horizons Medical Center and was also in business for herself.  She baby sat for over 75 children and loved collecting chickens. Her chicken collection numbers in the thousands and ranges from 1 inch to 5 feet.

Bessie will be missed by her husband of nearly 15 years, Glenn Whitaker; her son, Gayle (Tina) Walker; grandchildren, Jackie (P.J.) Schaffer, Tierra (Austin Brown) Walker; her great grandchildren, Allen Wayne and Isabella Marie Schaffer and her siblings, Shirley (Johnny) Ballard, Barb (Harold) Purvis, Zelma (Donald) Wilson, Thelma (Vernon) House, Vickie (Wayne) Robey, Janie Belle (Mike) Collins, Chester Smith, Jr.(Maxine), Joyce Ann (Calvin) Barnes and Jack (Brenda) Smith.

McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements.  Family will receive friends at the Main Street location on Monday, September 23rd from 4-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday with Bro. David "Milkweed Wotier, Bro. Keith Miller and Bro. Bill Allen presiding. Burial will be in the Owenton Cemetery and memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Hill Baptist Church.
